From Volcanoes to Kivu
The full western spine, gorillas to Lake Kivu to Nyungwe's chimps, tea and canopy.
Rwanda is small enough to cross and varied enough that crossing it matters. You begin in the Virunga bamboo with a gorilla family, then drop to Lake Kivu where the water is warm and there is nothing dangerous in it. The Congo Nile road runs south along the shore for hours. Nyungwe is different again, ancient montane forest with chimpanzees calling before light and a walkway strung seventy metres above the ravine, tea fields pressed up against the boundary.
Best months
June to September is the driest and best for Nyungwe's canopy walk and chimpanzee tracking. December to February is a good second window. Rwanda has run a low-season permit reduction for itineraries that add Nyungwe and Akagera. It is not published on Visit Rwanda's permit page, so we confirm it with RDB before quoting it.
