Portrait of a chimpanzee in the forest

Chimpanzee trekking

A chimpanzee community wakes with a scream that carries a kilometre through closed canopy, and then it moves. Following it is the point.

Thirteen primate species share this forest, but the chimpanzees are why people come. Standard tracking gives you one hour with a habituated community. It is excellent and most visitors are more than satisfied with it.

The habituation day

You report at 06:00 and walk to a nest site while it is still dark. The community drops out of the trees one by one and you stay with them: feeding, patrolling, grooming, hunting, until they build fresh nests at dusk. Four to eight hours on the move, and no timed hour at the end of it.

The other twelve species

Red colobus, L'Hoest's, red-tailed and grey-cheeked mangabey, black-and-white colobus, olive baboon. Kibale's supporting cast is the reason a second day in this forest is never wasted.

How much is a chimpanzee permit in Kibale?

Standard chimpanzee tracking is USD 250 for a foreign non-resident, dropping to USD 200 in low season. The full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is USD 300. Both rise on 1 January 2027, to USD 300 and USD 400 respectively, so 2027 departures are quoted at the new rates.

Is chimpanzee trekking easier than gorilla trekking?

The walking is easier and the watching is harder. Kibale is comparatively flat, so you are not climbing the way you climb in Bwindi. But chimpanzees move fast through the canopy and rarely sit still, so you will be walking briskly, looking upward, and photographing in poor light. Gorillas stay put and let you look at them.

Kibale or Nyungwe for chimpanzees?

Kibale, unless you are already in Rwanda. Kibale holds around 1,500 chimpanzees in a well-studied forest with the highest sighting rates in East Africa, and it is the only place offering a full-day habituation experience. Nyungwe's community at Cyamudongo is smaller and harder to find, but the forest itself is extraordinary and the canopy walkway has no equivalent in Uganda.

Common questions

Prices and rules here were checked against the park authorities in August 2026. We reconfirm every figure before it goes on a quotation.

  • How much is a chimpanzee permit in Kibale?

Standard chimpanzee tracking costs USD 250 for a foreign non-resident, or USD 200 in low season. The full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is USD 300. Both increase on 1 January 2027 to USD 300 and USD 400 respectively.

  • What is the chimpanzee habituation experience?

A full day with a chimpanzee community that is still being habituated to human presence, accompanied by the researchers doing that work. You start at 06:00 at a night nest site and stay with the community until they build fresh nests at dusk, typically four to eight hours. Standard tracking gives you one hour instead.

  • Is chimpanzee trekking easier than gorilla trekking?

The terrain is easier because Kibale is comparatively flat, but the viewing is harder. Chimpanzees move quickly through the canopy and rarely stay still, so you walk further and photograph in worse light. Gorillas remain in one place and tolerate close approach.

  • Kibale or Nyungwe for chimpanzee trekking?

Kibale, unless you are already travelling in Rwanda. Kibale holds roughly 1,500 chimpanzees with the highest sighting rates in East Africa and is the only park offering the full-day habituation experience. Nyungwe's Cyamudongo community is smaller and harder to locate, though the forest and its canopy walkway are exceptional.
