Mist over the forested slopes of the Virunga range

Four Borders, One Rift

Bwindi, the Virungas, Laikipia, the Mara and the Serengeti in one continuous arc.

20 days Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania from USD 38,940 per person sharing

Nettles burn your forearms on the Buhoma climb, then a silverback exhales two metres away and the forest stops making noise. Nine days later you sit in Kogatende dust while wildebeest pour off a four-metre bank into brown water. Between those mornings: chimpanzees screaming through Kibale before sunrise, Rwanda's terraced volcanoes dropping away beneath your boots, Samburu trackers reading lion pug marks in Laikipia sand. Four passport stamps, three currencies, one rift valley running unbroken from Albertine cloud forest to Serengeti short grass.

Best months

Late June to early October, with the first three weeks of September the sweet spot. Kogatende and Mara Triangle crossings peak from August into September. The same window is the drier of Uganda and Rwanda's two dry seasons, so Bwindi's slopes firm up and treks average two to four hours instead of six. Mid-December to February is the fallback, with Ndutu calving replacing the river crossings.

Signature moments

  • Two gorilla populations, Bwindi nettles and Virunga bamboo, six days apart

  • Full research day with habituating chimpanzees, not one tourist hour

  • Mara River crossings watched from both the Kenyan and Tanzanian banks

  • Star bed above the Ewaso Nyiro, no walls, no roof

  • Day 1 Entebbe

    Lake Victoria arrival night

Met airside at Entebbe and transferred ten minutes to No.5 Boutique Hotel above the lake. Fish eagles over the garden, early dinner, permits and park paperwork reconfirmed by your guide.

  • Day 2 Kibale Forest

    Aerolink west to Kasese

Aerolink Uganda flies Entebbe to Kasese in roughly 90 minutes on a Cessna Grand Caravan. Drive north through tea estates to Kyaninga Lodge, crater lake below, afternoon walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.

  • Day 3 Kibale Forest

    Four hours with the chimpanzees

Report to Kanyanchu at 06:00 for the chimpanzee habituation experience, joining researchers from nest to nest rather than the single hour standard trekkers receive. Second night at Kyaninga.

  • Day 4 Ishasha

    Tree-climbing lions at dusk

Drive south into Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kazinga Channel boat past hippo pods and buffalo. Continue to Ishasha Wilderness Camp on the Ntungwe River, fig trees holding draped lions.

  • Day 5 Bwindi

    Into the Impenetrable Forest

Three hours on the escarpment road to Buhoma. Bwindi Lodge faces the forest wall directly. Afternoon with the Batwa Trail community, trek briefing, boots and gaiters checked and rented as needed.

  • Day 6 Bwindi

    Silverback in the nettles

One to six hours through vine, mud and stinging nettle to your allocated Buhoma sector family, one hour at close range, celebration lunch back at camp.

  • Day 7 Volcanoes

    Cyanika border into Rwanda

Drive to Cyanika, clear Ugandan exit and Rwandan entry inside an hour, then climb to Singita Kwitonda Lodge on the park boundary. Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura fill every window.

  • Day 8 Volcanoes

    Second family, higher bamboo

Kinigi briefing at 07:00. Rwanda's gorillas sit in open hagenia and bamboo at altitude, colder air, cleaner sightlines. Afternoon in the Kwitonda spa and shamba.

  • Day 9 Volcanoes

    Golden monkeys and Karisoke

Golden monkey trek in the lower bamboo, then the hike to Dian Fossey's grave at roughly 3,000 metres. Evening fireside with a Karisoke Research Center scientist.

  • Day 10 Laikipia

    RwandAir east, Safarilink north

RwandAir or Kenya Airways Kigali to Nairobi, about 1h30, near-hourly. Transfer to Wilson, Safarilink to Loisaba airstrip, sundowners at Loisaba Tented Camp above the Ewaso Nyiro.

  • Day 11 Laikipia

    Horseback, camels, star beds

Ride out at dawn with Loisaba's horses, track elephant with Space for Giants researchers, then sleep on a wheeled Star Bed platform rolled onto the escarpment under the Milky Way.

  • Day 12 Olare Motorogi

    Safarilink south to the Mara

Loisaba to Nairobi Wilson, connect to Ol Kiombo airstrip, roughly two hours in total. Mahali Mzuri holds twelve tents in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, no other vehicles at sightings.

  • Day 13 Olare Motorogi

    Lions before the reserve wakes

Out at 05:45 under a conservancy permit allowing off-road driving and night drives. Leopard along the Ntiakitiak riverbed, cheetah on termite mounds, breakfast served off the bonnet.

  • Day 14 Mara Triangle

    Angama and the Oloololo escarpment

Transfer across the reserve to Angama Mara, tents cantilevered 300 metres above the plain. Afternoon on the western bank of the Mara River watching herds gather and refuse.

  • Day 15 Mara Triangle

    Crossing at the river

Full day in the Triangle with a picnic lunch. Wildebeest mass, hesitate, then commit at Crossing Point Four while crocodiles work the current. Return to Angama after dark.

  • Day 16 Northern Serengeti

    Kenya Airways south, charter west

Fly Angama to Nairobi, Kenya Airways to Kilimanjaro in about an hour, then Coastal Aviation via Arusha to Kogatende. Sayari Camp by late afternoon, river twenty minutes away.

  • Day 17 Northern Serengeti

    The Tanzanian bank

Kogatende crossings run from the southern side. Sayari's guides hold position at a crossing point for hours rather than chasing radio calls. Afternoon among the Wogakuria kopjes for leopard.

  • Day 18 Northern Serengeti

    Balloon over the short grass

Lift off before sunrise with Serengeti Balloon Safaris, land for breakfast in the grass, then walk the Bologonja tributary with an armed TANAPA ranger and a Nomad guide.

  • Day 19 Ngorongoro

    Crater rim and Maasai highlands

Coastal Aviation Kogatende to Lake Manyara airstrip, drive up to The Highlands by Asilia on the Olmoti slopes. Geodesic domes, wood stoves, crater descent booked for first light.

  • Day 20 Kilimanjaro

    Crater floor, then home

Descend into Ngorongoro for black rhino, tusker bulls and flamingo on Lake Magadi. Lunch at Gibb's Farm in the Karatu coffee, transfer to Kilimanjaro International for evening departures.

Crossing the borders

The mechanics that decide whether a multi-country route works. We handle all of it, but you should know what it involves.

  • The East Africa Tourist Visa at USD 100 covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. We apply through Uganda's portal because Entebbe is your first entry. Tanzania sits outside the scheme and needs a separate e-visa before departure.

  • Cyanika is the crossing we use over Katuna. Your Ugandan vehicle hands you to a Rwandan vehicle at the barrier, roughly 45 minutes end to end with pre-lodged passenger manifests.

  • Every light-aircraft leg enforces 15 kg per person in a soft duffel including hand luggage. Hard cases are refused at check-in. Excess is stored free in Entebbe and Nairobi.

  • Nairobi requires a JKIA to Wilson road transfer for the Safarilink legs, minimum two hours in traffic. Gorilla permits are name-locked and non-transferable, and September dates sell out six to nine months ahead.

What the price actually covers.

From USD 38,940 per person sharing. Permits, park fees and charter legs are inside that number, not added at the end. International flights and visas are not.

  • Bwindi gorilla permit USD 800 and Volcanoes gorilla permit USD 1,500 per person

  • Kibale chimpanzee habituation permit USD 300 and golden monkey permit USD 100

  • All park, crater and conservancy fees including Olare Motorogi and the Mara Triangle

  • Every Aerolink, Safarilink and Coastal Aviation charter leg on the route

  • Kigali to Nairobi and Nairobi to Kilimanjaro scheduled sectors

  • Serengeti Balloon Safaris flight with bush breakfast
