A chimpanzee mother and infant in sunlit forest

Apes of the Albertine

Both gorilla populations, a chimpanzee habituation day, and golden monkeys in ten days.

10 days Rwanda, Uganda from USD 15,620 per person sharing

This is the primate circuit stripped of filler. You trek Rwanda's Virunga gorillas in open bamboo at altitude, cross a farm-country border at Cyanika, and go again in Bwindi where the forest closes over your head and the light drops. Different terrain, different genetics, the same held breath. Then Kibale, where you walk with researchers all day while a community of chimpanzees learns your shape. Golden monkeys spin through bamboo, crater lakes sit black in old volcanic throats, and nothing on the schedule is padding.

Best months

June to September and December to February, the two dry windows on the Albertine Rift. Trails drain properly, treks shorten to two or three hours, and forest light improves. Uganda discounts gorilla permits to USD 600 in April, May and November, which makes the wet shoulder genuinely attractive if you accept mud and a real chance of a six-hour climb.

  • Four hours with a semi-habituated family instead of the standard hour

  • Golden monkeys at dawn, Fossey's grave by mid-morning

  • Full nest-to-nest chimpanzee day with Kibale's research team

  • Day 1 Kigali

    Arrival, memorial, Kimironko

Land at Kigali International, visa on arrival USD 50. The Retreat by Heaven in Kiyovu. Afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then Kimironko market and a coffee cupping at Question Coffee.

  • Day 2 Volcanoes

    Terraces up to Kinigi

Two and a half hours north to Singita Kwitonda Lodge or Bisate Lodge, both on the park boundary. Afternoon planting session in the reforestation nursery, trek briefing and porter allocation.

  • Day 3 Volcanoes

    Rwanda's gorillas at altitude

Kinigi at 07:00. Groups sit high in bamboo and hagenia with open sightlines and cold, thin air. One hour, then hot lunch and a fireside afternoon.

  • Day 4 Volcanoes

    Golden monkeys and Fossey's grave

Golden monkey trek in the lower bamboo at dawn, then the steep hike to Dian Fossey's grave at the old Karisoke site. Afternoon at the Fossey Fund campus.

  • Day 5 Bwindi

    Cyanika border, southern sector

Cross at Cyanika, roughly 45 minutes with a vehicle handover, then two hours to Nkuringo. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge sits at 2,200 metres looking straight into the Virungas.

  • Day 6 Bwindi

Four hours with a habituating group

The gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector, four hours with researchers and a semi-habituated family. Standard one-hour permits remain available on request.

  • Day 7 Kibale Forest

Charter north over the crater fields

Light-aircraft charter Kisoro to Kasese, about 45 minutes, over the Rwenzori foothills. Road transfer to Kyaninga Lodge above its crater lake. Evening swim and a Rwenzori sundowner.

  • Day 8 Kibale Forest

    Nest to nest with chimpanzees

Kanyanchu at 06:00. You stay with the community from the moment they leave night nests until they build fresh ones at dusk. Packed lunch in the forest.

  • Day 9 Kyambura

    Gorge chimps and crater lakes

Drive south to Kyambura Gorge Lodge on the escarpment. Afternoon in the sunken gorge for its isolated chimpanzee community, or a Lake Nyamunuka crater drive for elephant and hyena.

  • Day 10 Entebbe

    Aerolink east, evening departure

Aerolink Uganda from Kasese to Entebbe, roughly 90 minutes. Day room at No.5 Boutique Hotel, lunch on the lake terrace, then evening international departures.

Crossing the borders

The mechanics that decide whether a multi-country route works. We handle all of it, but you should know what it involves.

  • Start in Kigali and finish in Entebbe on an open-jaw ticket. The East Africa Tourist Visa at USD 100 is lodged through Rwanda's Irembo portal since Kigali is first entry, and it covers both countries plus Kenya if you extend.

  • Cyanika is our standard crossing for the southern Bwindi sectors. Katuna is longer and suits Buhoma-side lodges. Either way a Rwandan vehicle hands you to a Ugandan vehicle at the barrier with manifests pre-lodged.

  • Gorilla habituation permits are issued only in the Rushaga sector and are capped at four visitors per day, so they must be secured nine to twelve months ahead for dry-season dates.

  • Charter and Aerolink legs allow 15 kg per person in a soft duffel including hand luggage. Kisoro and Kihihi airstrips are grass and weather-dependent, so we hold a road contingency for the Kisoro to Kasese leg.

What the price actually covers.

From USD 15,620 per person sharing. Permits, park fees and charter legs are inside that number, not added at the end. International flights and visas are not.

  • Volcanoes National Park gorilla permit, USD 1,500 per person

  • Bwindi gorilla habituation experience permit, USD 1,500 per person

  • Volcanoes golden monkey permit, USD 100 per person

  • Kibale chimpanzee habituation permit, USD 300 per person

  • Dian Fossey grave hike fee and Fossey Fund campus visit

  • Kisoro to Kasese charter and the Aerolink Kasese to Entebbe sector
